NOTES
FROM THE PRINCIPAL: The language we use with children can help them develop self-control. When adults yell over the
childrenÕs voices, they are asserting their own control, and the goal is
obedience. When a Responsive Classroom teacher sounds a soft chime as a
transitional signal and waits for the children to respond with their quiet
attention, she is teaching them self-control. When we create lists of
specific rules, and corresponding punishments for non-compliance, we teach
children to behave in order to avoid punishment. The flip-side of this is
offering rewards for expected behaviors, which teaches children to comply for
self-gain. When the RC teacher leads them to understand the benefits of
creating a community in which individuals respect themselves, each other, and
the shared environment, she encourages them to choose goodness for its own sake
and to become self-supervising.
Library
Night, Dec. 13,
